Medication Policy

"School clinics will not provide any stock medication to students. Parents or guardians must provide all medications for their students to the clinic. School nurses are unable to provide any medications to students unless the parent has provided the medication to the school and completed the Authorization for Medication or Health Procedure / Treatment Form. This includes over-the-counter medications like Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Tums and Benadryl."

The reasoning is because "If a parent brings in an OTC medication for any specific issue and signs a form to give it, you can give it, as long as what the parent wants given follows the instructions on the label. If a doctor gives an order for a specific medication to be given for a specific issue, you can give it. If you, a nurse, decide what medication to give for a specific issue, you are practicing outside the scope of nursing practice. "
